I’m a huge fan of Eric Rohmann’s work, especially his odder books like Pumpkinhead, so I’m thrilled to discover that he has a new book out with a character who dies in the opening pages. I can’t wait to see it!

I got to meet Eric years ago, and he did a wonderful thing for a young, aspring children’s illustrator - he invited me to his studio, and gave me feedback on my drawings. Thank you Eric! I’m finally doing it!

A small tribute to a man whose work meant so much to me.

I’ve been toiling away at many many busy projects, and I’m finally popping my head up to go out to Toronto for this year’s TCAF. It’s the best thing of its kind every year, and I love it so much I can’t describe. I’m sitting at table 153, back by the base of the stairs, beside the lovely wishing pond and several good friends, and potential new friends, like a few of the Adventure Time fellas!

I’ll have gobs of things (assuming I get all my baggage to come all the way to Toronto with me) such as: new t-shirts, new doodle/activity books (plus a DELUXE edition), a new mini-comic, new buttons (and how!), a reprint of my Three Bears comic along with the usual pile of gorgeous prints from Cloudy Collection, a few original drawings, and maybe some on-the-spot custom doodles, just for you?

On Sunday afternoon, May 6, I’ll be doing a tag-team Simple Characters drawing workshop for kids with Melissa Mendes. Come find us on the second floor from 3:45-4:30!

I love this show. It really is the most fun I have at this type of thing. I come home exhausted, but so thoroughly inspired to make more stuff, which is great, since I’ll be working on my next book with Kids Can Press for the rest of the summer!

So the lovely times a thousand Lindsay Nohl of Paper Bicycle and Light Grey Art Labs sent me a message a few weeks ago and just like that we started developing a special event! And now it’s official: June 16 and 17th (with some optional networking events Jun 15) I’ll be hosting an intensive workshop at LGAL in Minneapolis called ILLUSTRATION BOOTCAMP. It’s going to be really exciting, geared towards current illustrators and curious creative folk alike; I’m going to share my knowledge as an illustrator, get the creative energy flowing with some fun exercises, and then there’ll be awesome networking and collaboration activities. We’re working on getting some great guest speakers too. It’s going to be pretty amazing and reinvigorating for all who attend.

Lots of details on the website: the workshop costs $160 for locals, but we’re offering it as a travel opportunity too with a hotel package. Please spread the word; I hope you can attend it and make this an awesome experience!

This great advice, and more - oddly only addressed to writers - from Colin Nissan on McSweeney’s. Actually, some of my favorite books on the creative process are written about writing (fave: Anne Lamott’s Bird By Bird). I suppose that is because the people most-qualified to write about the creative process are mostly writers.
